INDIA TO DAY

Unto the horizon everyway ,strcheh all barren sand
Dusty drought spreading fast; what a show of widowed Land
The aging tree with drying bark , biting the earth with Canine greed
threaten sprouting seeds or greenish growth refuse them a food and feed
Some olden cracked and stooping trunk want to crawl and keep its hold !

Only here and on this land centuries back civilisation rose
now , that's dead, all around and now the festive termite-growth
desert spreads and gains in grip ; starving green of child-hood time
Overhead, - in revenge wrath, the Sun casts its angry fire
the foxes are free ; the hayenas howl with festive joy an deadly tease !

All seeds are dry and no earth holds the fertile hope - any more
the vast and losing tropical sky yawn and heave the depressive shigh
even though the aspiring earth ,even now with dying hope
dream some seeds with vital flow and sometimes smiles with in-buit joy !

Drought and drought spreading drought ! enthroned upon in winning spree
parasites are happy , un-like those that struggle hard to live as ' free'
Stalwart trees are long back dead; the angry Sun now spitting ' death '
All pale, dry grass peep out and cry once and moremore for thick-strong 'dads'
Mirrage laughs loud and ancient land sighs and cries for a bit of 'health' !

[This poem was composed in Bengali in 1974 and poublished in the book 'SAMAYA BADO BYANGA RASIK (1975) ; translated now to test its worth ]
