Penicillin may have launched the sexual revolution

Published: Monday, Jan 28, 2013, 21:53 IST
Agency: ANI
The 1950s were not as prudish as they seemed on the surface, an economist has said.
According to a recent analysis by Andrew Francis, the rise in risky and non-traditional sexual relations that marked the swinging ‘60s actually began as much as a decade earlier, during the conformist ‘50s.
“It’s a common assumption that the sexual revolution began with the permissive attitudes of the 1960s and the development of contraceptives like the birth control pill,” Emory University economist Francis said.
“The evidence, however, strongly indicates that the widespread use of penicillin, leading to a rapid decline in syphilis during the 1950s, is what launched the modern sexual era,” he said.
As penicillin drove down the cost of having risky sex, the population started having more of it, Francis says, comparing the phenomena to the economic law of demand: When the cost of a good falls, people buy more of the good.
“People don’t generally think of sexual behaviour in economic terms but it’s important to do so because sexual behaviour, just like other behaviours, responds to incentives,” he said.
Syphilis reached its peak in the United States in 1939, when it killed 20,000 people.
“It was the AIDS of the late 1930s and early 1940s,” Francis said.
“Fear of catching syphilis and dying of it loomed large,” he said.
Penicillin was discovered in 1928, but it was not put into clinical use until 1941. As World War II escalated, and sexually transmitted diseases threatened the troops overseas, penicillin was found to be an effective treatment against syphilis.
“The military wanted to rid the troops of STDs and all kinds of infections, so that they could keep fighting,” Francis said.
“That really sped up the development of penicillin as an antibiotic,” he said.
Right after the war, penicillin became a clinical staple for the general population as well. In the United States, syphilis went from a chronic, debilitating and potentially fatal disease to one that could be cured with a single dose of medicine.
From 1947 to 1957, the syphilis death rate fell by 75 percent and the syphilis incidence rate fell by 95 percent.
“That’s a huge drop in syphilis. It’s essentially a collapse,” Francis said.
In order to test his theory that risky sex increased as the cost of syphilis dropped, Francis analyzed data from the 1930s through the 1970s from state and federal health agencies. Some of the data was only available on paper documents, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) digitized it at the request of Francis.
For his study, Francis chose three measures of sexual behaviour: The illegitimate birth ratio; the teen birth share; and the incidence of gonorrhea, a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease that tends to spread quickly.
“As soon as syphilis bottoms out, in the mid- to late-1950s, you start to see dramatic increases in all three measures of risky sexual behaviour,” Francis said.
While many factors likely continued to fuel the sexual revolution during the 1960s and 1970s, Francis says the 1950s and the role of penicillin have been largely overlooked.
“The 1950s are associated with prudish, more traditional sexual behaviours,” he said.
“That may have been true for many adults, but not necessarily for young adults. It’s important to recognize how reducing the fear of syphilis affected sexual behaviours,” he said.
A few physicians sounded moralistic warnings during the 1950s about the potential for penicillin to affect behaviour. Spanish physician Eduardo Martinez Alonso referenced Romans 6:23, and the notion that God uses diseases to punish people, when he wrote:
“The wages of sin are now negligible. One can almost sin with impunity, since the sting of sinning has been removed,” he said.
Such moralistic approaches, equating disease with sin, are counterproductive, Francis says, stressing that interventions need to focus on how individuals may respond to the cost of disease
He found that the historical data of the syphilis epidemic parallels the contemporary AIDS epidemic.
“Some studies have indicated that the development of highly active antiretroviral therapy for treating HIV may have caused some men who have sex with men to be less concerned about contracting and transmitting HIV, and more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviours,” Francis said.
“Policy makers need to take into consideration behavioural responses to changes in the cost of disease, and implement strategies that are holistic and longsighted.
“To focus exclusively on the defeat of one disease can set the stage for the onset of another if preemptive measures are not taken,” he added.
The study has been published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

Discovery of largest structure in Universe questions Einstein's assumption

Subodh Varma, TNN Jan 15, 2013, 06.26PM IST
NEW DELHI: The discovery of the largest known structure in the Universe, announced last week, is more than a gigantic curiosity.
Scientists are wondering whether things are getting too hot for one of the most venerable assumptions of cosmology, propounded by none other than Albert Einstein himself.
The discovery of the Huge Large Quasar Group (LQG) was announced by a multinational team of astronomers led by Dr Roger G. Clowes of the University of Central Lancashire. Other members of the team included Kathryn Harris (UCLan), Srinivasan Raghunathan, Luis E. Campusano (Universidad de Chile), Ilona K. Sochting (University of Oxford) and Matthew J. Graham ( California Institute of Technology).
The Huge-LQG is 4 billion light years in length, that is, light would take 4 billion years to cross it end to end. That's nearly one-twentieth the estimated diameter of the whole known Universe. The team used data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the most comprehensive 3D map of the universe. They identified 73 quasars, the glowing cores found at the centre of galaxies, surrounding the central black holes.
The reason this discovery has sent ripples across the cosmologists world is that it appears to be going against the Cosmological Principle, which says that "the universe, when viewed at a sufficiently large scale, looks the same no matter where you are observing it from" according to the Royal Astronomical Society, London. Einstein had made this assumption in order to make his theory of general relativity work for the whole Universe.
Till the discovery of the Huge-LGQ, it was assumed that the upper limit of size for cosmic structures was somewhere around one billion light years. Another cluster of quasars, discovered by Clowes himself in 1982 was estimated to be of that size. The Huge-LQG is four times as large, and hence shakes up the science of the Universe considerably.
How do we know that the 73 quasars are part of a connected "structure"? Responding to this query posed by TOI, Dr.Clowes said, "With the quasars we look for a set that connects within a specified distance from one quasar to the next. We then assess the statistical significance by calculating the volume that encloses them and testing whether the resulting density is a significant departure from uniformity. Essentially, it's a connection algorithm combined with statistical significance. An analogy might be of looking for an island emerging from an ocean".
The record for the largest structure in the Universe was previously held by the Sloan Great Wall, a 1.38 billion light years long filament or wall of galaxies. However, many scientists have felt that the Sloan Great Wall is simply three clusters of galaxies which appear to be aligned.
"I believe that in the case of the SGW it was simply a visual judgement from the maps of the galaxy distribution," Clowes too explains.
However, he adds that one or two papers have been published that "have applied retrospectively connection algorithms similar to ours" to the Sloan Great Wall
